A short peek at a favorite appliance store is enough to turn any techie gaga over the new technological advancements that are continuously coming up in the market. And as easily as these technological gadgets come up to replace old, obsolete ones, the more tempted we are to acquire them as fast as they come.

Unfortunately, new technologies and new appliances in our home does not run on nothing. They run on electricity, which furthermore, runs on money! Needless to say, the more technologies we have in our homes, the higher our electric bills. This is not to say that an average homeowner should simply give up on the joys and the perks of a bountiful entertainment room or of dining on hot, home-cooked meals prepared with state-of-the-art kitchen appliances. However, one must realize that it is all a matter of knowing when and how to use these home technologies and appliances.

Since its impossible for one person to be in two rooms at the same time, watching two different television shows at the same time, turn off all unused or unnecessary devices. Unless you are living with your kids who each have their own televisions, computers and other devices in their rooms, this energy-saving tip is quite simple to follow. This tip goes the same for water heaters, heaters or air conditioning systems. If you want bath-ready water or warm, cozy place to come home to after a tiring day at work, heaters and water heaters can easily be programmed to turn on automatically an hour or a few minutes before you arrive home. This way, you can avoid keeping heaters and water heaters on all day when there is no immediate need for you to do so.

Creativity can also come in handy when conserving on electricity. On warmer days, it doesnt hurt to open windows and let fresh air in. And if you have not heard of candles, learn the word. Dinners for two can also be made extra special on coal-grilled barbecues in the backyard and two sticks of good ol candles.

The possibilities of saving on home energy are simply endless with a little help from everyone in your home and with a little touch of creative conservation. And the best part? You dont have to sacrifice luxury and convenience to save on home energy after all!

Colon Health by Dr. Norman Walker

Colon Health by Dr. Norman Walker Features & SpecificationsColon Health by Dr. Norman Walker Book DescriptionColon Health will take this forgotten part of your body and focus your full attention on it--and you'll never again take it for granted. This book shows how every organ, gland, and cell in the body is affected by the condition of the large intestine.About the AuthorDr. Norman Walker is the longest-lived, widely-known raw-foodist of the modern era. Thousands upon thousands of people credit Dr. Walker's live-vegetable-juice therapy for healing them of "incurable" diseases, including Jay Kordich, known to the world as "The Juiceman." When Jay Kordich had cancer, he met and was tremendously inspired by Dr. Walker. After healing himself of cancer through The Raw-Food Diet and juice therapy, Jay worked with Dr. Walker beginning in the 1940s up until Dr. Walker's death in the mid-80's at an age of well over 100.For more than 100 years, Norman W. Walker, Ph.D., proved through research and experience that well-being and long life go hand-in-hand. Through the non-stop activities of raw-food enthusiasts, such as Nature's First Law, modern day nutritionists and medical researchers are finally discovering the raw truths which Dr. Walker knew and taught throughout the twentieth century. Dr. Walker was living proof that a longer, healthier, more enjoyable life is achieved through The Raw-Food Diet, mental poise, and intelligent body care. Dr. Walker's contributions to the common heritage of humankind began before the turn of the century in London, where as a young man he became seriously ill due to over-work and stress. Unable to accept a sentence of ill-health and early death, Dr. Walker healed himself with living foods and vegetable juices. Among Dr. Walker's greatest contributions was his discovery of the therapeutic value of fresh vegetable juices and in 1930, the development of what would become known as the Norwalk Press Juicer. The present "juicing" craze is direct

A popular summer staple, the tomato is a fruit that is served as a vegetable. Few summer flavors can beat the taste of an excellent tomato on a salad or hamburger or in a sandwich. Tomatoes can come in red, yellow, green, purple, brown, and even striped verities.

The tomato plant is an herbaceous, sprawling plant that is part of the nightshade family. Close cousins of the plant include tobacco, chili peppers, potatoes, and eggplants. As the tomato is a part of the nightshade family, for many years people avoided eating the fruit. They avoided the fruit because a number of plants in the nightshade family are extremely poisonous. In the 20th century, this idea began to change in the United States.

The plant is native to Central America, southern North America, and South America. This gives the plant a native range spanning from Mexico to Argentina. To grow well, tomato plants require a minimum of 6 hours of sun a day.

The tomato was originally brought to Europe by Spanish explorers. The idea of eating the fruit did not take on quickly because of its association with nightshade. The tomato is a fruit in the botanical sense but lacks the dessert quality sweetness of other fruits. Because of this, it is more commonly prepared as a vegetable. The tomato is sweet but is accompanied by a bitter, acidic taste. When cooking the tomato, the heating process tempers the bitterness and allows the sweetness to come out in more flavor.

As the tomato tastes great on sandwiches, in salads, or sliced, it is a great summer food. The food is a good source vitamins A and C as well as a number of antioxidants. The lycopene found in the fruit is excellent for a person's heart making cooked tomatoes an excellent food if one is trying to be heart healthy.

When growing tomato plants, there are two broad categories, indeterminate and determinate. Determinate plants grow to a certain height and then stop. They then flower and produce all of their fruit within a relatively short time. This is a great type of plant to grow if trying to can tomatoes but isn't the best type if you want a summer of tomatoes to enjoy once a week, or so. Indeterminate plants grow, flower, and set their fruit over a longer period of time. They basically grow in stages. This is the best type of plant to get if the goal is to have a tomato a week.

Raw foodism (also called rawism) is based on eating un-cooked, un-processed, and often organic food. Believers feel the higher the percentage of raw food in the diet, the greater the health benefits. Many raw food eaters are vegan, and don't eat any meat, fish, or dairy products but others eat raw meat and fish. By the way, when these people say raw they means food that hasn't been cooked higher than 115 F (46 C), some put the limit at 104 F (40 C).

Raw food followers believe that eating uncooked foods encourages weight loss and prevents or heals many illnesses and chronic diseases. The medical evidence is mixed. To inject a personal note, as a college student I breakfasted on raw eggs which I downed with a glass of water. My objective was to save time, I don't even know if the movement existed in those days. I wouldn't eat raw eggs today because I think they are filthy and might transmit illnesses. By the way, I am not a doctor or other health-care professional.

Some raw food vegans are fruitarians, juicearians, or sproutarians. Fruitarians eat primarily or exclusively fruits. Juicearians process their raw plant foods into juice. Sproutarians eat primarily or exclusively sprouted food, such as bean sprouts. Alleged benefits of a raw vegan diet include weight loss, increased energy, clear skin, and general health improvement.

Raw animal food includes meat, cheese, and fish. Raw meat eaters should seek out grass-fed animals which according to many studies have a greatly reduced risk of bacteria than do grain-fed animals. Furthermore grass-fed meat contains more nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and Omega-3 fatty acids than does grain-fed meat.

If you are going to get involved in raw food you may want to invest in the following equipment: blender, food processor, juicer, and dehydrator. Some people will eat frozen food, others will not. Some of them will eat smoked food, others will not. And some distinguish between cold-smoked and hot-smoked food. Be careful, there are clear dangers in eating some raw foods such as kidney beans and unpeeled potatoes.

Here are some of the alleged benefits of raw foods. Raw foods contain digestive enzymes that are destroyed when food is heated beyond the temperature range listed above. Destroying these enzymes is said to be a cause of obesity. Raw foods contain useful bacteria and other microorganisms that aid the immune system and digestion. Raw foods have higher nutrient values than cooked food. Processed food contains all kinds of chemicals that are bad for us. (I certainly agree with that.) Cooked foods may contain toxins and can lead to acidosis. On the other hand, food poisoning from eating raw or undercooked food is a definite possibility. Believe it or not, even jalapeno peppers can host dangerous microorganisms. Many raw food eaters are underweight, while this may sound tempting to those who are trying to lose weight but being underweight can be a health problem.

Just Jerky : The Complete Guide to Making It

Here's the do-it-yourself guide to making your own jerky in an oven, smoker, or food dehydrator with strips or ground beef, venison, poultry, fish and even soy protein.

To begin your search for Christmas decorations just head outside. Take a trip with the family to the mountains, lake, park, river, or your own property, to search the ground for fallen branches and twigs. Pick up pinecones, acorns, seedpods, late blooming wildflowers, and fallen leaves. Sprigs of cedar, pine tree, and douglas fir are choices as well. The best thing about these green decorations is that they leave the green in your wallet.

Once you get your findings home, begin the decorating. Fill bowls, boots, baskets, stockings, buckets, wine glasses, or anything else you can think of, with your findings. Hang stockings from the mantel and fill them with greens and pinecones so they stick out the top and spill over. Fill wine glasses with tiny pinecones, greens, and cranberries, and place them on the table or mantle. Make wreaths and boughs with your greens and embellish with bows and large pinecones. Hang wreaths on the front door and windows while placing boughs on the mantel or above doorways.

If you own a dehydrator, this can come in handy to make dried fruit to use in your decorations. Slice apples and oranges and place them in the dehydrator. Slice them about 1/3 inch thick and make sure to leave the peel in tact. Slice them in half and continue slicing in the same fashion. These fruit slices can be used in potpourri, garlands, to decorate wreaths, to place in bowls, tie to Christmas gifts, the ideas are endless.

Fill a wooden bowl or antique wooden trough with nuts in their shells. Use hazel nuts, brazil nuts, almonds, and so on. Place the bowl on the coffee table and surround the bowl with your greens and pinecones. Place a couple of candles with candlesticks on either end of the bowl and light the candles when guests arrive.

Make gingerbread and sugar cookies cut out in Christmas shapes and decorate them with frosting and embellishments like gumdrops, raisins, m & ms, and jelly beans. Place your homemade cookies in bowls around the house to welcome guests. Send your guests home with little goodie bags filled with cookies and nuts. Tie the bags with ribbons and attach your dried fruit to the ribbons.

If you want to try one of the most well known diets around, consider the raw food diet.

Although the diet is exactly as it sounds, there is much more to this diet to know. It is all about understanding why proponents are so dedicated to a raw diet. Hopefully by the time you finish this article, you will have a good sense of what the raw food diet is and what results people report when they follow this style of eating.

Eating only raw foods might be the hot thing right now, but it is hardly new. It actually dates back to prehistoric times, before prehistoric man began cooking with fire. In more modern times, it really began its current day popularity rise in the early 1900s, when proponents Herbert Shelton and Ann Wigmore argued that a raw diet is the ideal one for humans.

Other proponents over the years have included Artturi Virtanen, who said that enzymes released when someone chews raw food are processed in the body in a way that aids digestion.

In 1984, the book 'The New Raw Energy' by Leslie Kenton started the rise of the current raw food diet.

Today, more and more people say they are trying to eat raw foods, following in the footsteps of popular celebrities like Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson.

Now, when we say raw food, we are not suggesting you throw a raw steak on your plate and enjoy that with a salad. Raw food advocates are also vegetarians, so we are not talking about raw meat here. People who eat a raw food diet eat primarily a diet consisting of raw nuts, seeds and sprouted seeds, fresh fruits and vegetables, freshly squeezed or juiced fruit and vegetable juices, purified water, unpasteurized dairy products and other foods that are free of processing and chemicals.

Most raw food advocates try to keep to a diet that is 75% raw, with the only processed foods being fruit and vegetables that are dried in a food dehydrator. Those following this eating plan say that food should never be heated hotter than 116 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the temperature at which a food dehydrator works.

Now, you have to assume that if people follow this kind of stringent eating plan, there is something in it for them, right? Many claim that eating this way is the best possible way to eat and cite many benefits of a raw food diet:

1 - Reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes

2 - More energy and vibrancy

3 - Better skin and slow signs of aging

4 - Reduction of a variety of digestive ailments

5 - Healing of illness and reduction in chronic diseases

6 - Weight loss and easy weight maintenance

Experts say that if you plan to begin a raw food diet, you should follow a plan designed by a doctor or expert in the field of raw food diets. It is very hard to get the right mix of nutrients, experts say, so following a prescribed eating plan ensures you get enough calcium and protein, in particular.

Hopefully, you have an idea of how the raw food diet works and have enough information to help you decide if the diet is right for you.

It may not be the right diet for everyone, but as with anything, it is worth a try if you are interested. If anything, it is a healthy eating plan that anyone with an interest in improving health naturally can try.
